Hello and happy Tuesday; today is National Flag Day, which was first proclaimed in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson! I’m back in your inbox this morning with everything you need to know about what’s happening in Los Angeles. Let’s do it…
Did a driver think someone was going to shoot him? Also, what’s burning, and what’s under control? Finally, first-time homebuyers should look outside L.A., maybe even the state.
First, today’s weather:
Clouds giving way to sun. High: 80 Low: 64.

π’ Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 74.5% don’t want fireworks, 17.6% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 5.9% want to choose what to buy, and another 2% don’t care one way or the other.)
Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
- On Saturday morning, a driver in a 2001 Ford F-150 jumped the curb and drove “onto the sidewalk, crashing into several street vendor stands and pedestrians.” It happened at Alvarado Street and Wilshire Boulevard. The driver initially asserted “he suddenly thought someone was pointing a gun at him” and lost control. “The driver wasn’t impaired and was not arrested, according to police.” (ABC)
- What’s burning? As of Sunday, there is the Sheep Fire in Wrightwood. Highway 138 to Highway 2 is closed. (As noted by KFI news, “Evacuation warnings have been issued.”) The Wala Fire south of Camp Pendleton had been brought under control. The Riverbed Fire spread to Opal Canyon. The Barrett Junction Fire resulted in a loss of about 65 acres. Even if you are not affected by traffic snarls or evacuations, please keep in mind that air quality will be negatively affected because of the blazes. (Patch)
- If you’re thinking of buying a home for the first time, look outside of Los Angeles. We learned on Monday that the City is ranked as the worst metro area for first-time homebuyers. With the median home price being $860,000, most younger buyers have a difficult time finding a place. Riverside, San Jose, San Francisco, and San Diego aren’t much better. Conversely, the median home price in Pittsburgh, PA is $169,000. Other great options include “Minneapolis, MN; Cincinnati, OH; Kansas City, MO; and Buffalo, NY.” (Fox)
- Giorgio Chiellini is coming to Los Angeles FC! At 37 years old, he’s looking for “an experience elsewhere in order to slowly end my career as a player.” As a player for Juventus, he “won nine Serie A titles, as well as the Coppa Italia five times” over the last 17 years. (BBC)
- Mark your calendars! The third annual Juneteenth in LA Parade takes place Sunday at 11 a.m. The starting point is Inglewood High School. Cars will join “starting at La Brea Avenue and Nutwood Street in Inglewood and looping around South Los Angeles in support of the many Black-owned businesses thriving in the region.” It ends at Inglewood City Hall. (NBC)
