Pro-Palestinian activists protest at the cenotaph

Two pro-Gaza activists were arrested after placing a Palestinian flag on the cenotaph during a protest calling for an arms embargo on Israel.

The activists, from protest group Youth Demand, were pictured sitting in front of the war memorial in central London, after writing “180,000 killed” in chalk on the road.

In a statement, Youth Demand also threatened to disrupt the official opening of parliament on Wednesday because of the “atrocities taking place in Gaza.”

“Young people will not stand idly by while governments continue to support genocide. We deserve better. Young people across the country are coming together to resist. Youth Demand will be taking action in central London from 13th to 20th July.”

Protester Olivia Burnett, 22, said: “At the end of World War II, this country looked at the bodies and promised that we would never allow these kinds of atrocities to happen again.

“This monument reminds us of those who gave their lives fighting genocide and that ‘never again’ means never again to anyone. The Labour Party is disrespecting this legacy by being complicit in genocide and enabling arms sales to Israel.”
