Floods hit Worthing after yellow weather warning

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain from 3pm today, July 15, until 9am tomorrow, July 16, covering the whole of Sussex, across the coast and inland.

Worthing was hit by flooding this evening as heavy rain began.

Footage shows water rapidly overflowing from the burst sewer covers, while police closed the Newland Road which the AA reported as “impassable”.

The Met Office weather map showed Worthing and Chichester could be worst hit this evening, with up to 16mm per hour potentially hitting Worthing.

Surface water has also been reported by the AA on the A27 Sompting bypass westbound at Upper Brighton Road, with drivers warned to “approach with caution”.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Rain showers, heavy at times and with a risk of thunderstorms, are expected to develop later on Monday afternoon, then move northwards during the evening and overnight.

“15-20mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, with some places receiving up to 40mm in 2 hours, but perhaps more widely over a longer period overnight.

“There is a slight risk of power outages and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.

“There is a low risk that homes and businesses will be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.”
