NASCAR is set to hold its first international event in Mexico City, marking a major milestone in the sport’s expansion and broadcasting. Scheduled for June 15, 2025, the race will be held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, a venue revered in motorsport circles for its storied history with Formula One and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. And next year, it will be streamed live on Amazon Prime Video.
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s executive vice president and chief racing and venue innovation officer, emphasized the significance of the milestone in a NASCAR statement.
“This [international event] “We’ve had a project in mind for a long time,” Kennedy explained. “We’ve talked about the continued iteration of our program, right? You can go back a few years, you went to new markets like Nashville and Austin, Texas.
“We went to the Coliseum for the Clash. … We saw our first street race in downtown Chicago, and this will be another first for us in many ways.”
Describing the upcoming Mexico City race, he said:
“It will certainly be a monumental event for us, the first time we go south of the border.”
This international adventure is not only an expansion, but also a deeply personal matter for NASCAR Cup Series driver Daniel Suárez.
Born in Mexico, Suárez shared his emotional connection to racing:
“For me, it’s like a dream. It’s really a dream come true.”
He vividly remembers his aspirations during his early years of racing in NASCAR Mexico, reflecting on his journey to the top of NASCAR racing.
“Exactly 10 years ago, I was here racing in NASCAR Mexico in 2014, and I won a race here before I left NASCAR México and went full-time to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2015, and I knew a few years before I got here that the NASCAR Xfinity Series had the opportunity to come to Mexico for a few years and I remember thinking what a dream it would be for me to one day race in the NASCAR Cup Series in my country.
“I remember thinking that, and now, nine years later, here we are in Mexico City.”
In partnership with OCESA, promoter of the Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix, NASCAR aims to leverage local expertise to organize major motorsport events. Alejandro Soberón, CEO of OCESA, highlighted the potential of this collaboration.
“At OCESA, we are dedicated to entertaining people,” commented Soberón. “And this has positioned us as the most powerful live events platform in Mexico and Latin America, as well as one of the most important globally.”
Amazon Prime Video will live stream the NASCAR Cup Series race, expanding its sports coverage footprint, while The CW will air the NASCAR Xfinity Series companion race scheduled one day earlier on June 14, 2025. This broadcast strategy not only expands viewership, but also strengthens NASCAR’s appeal to a global audience.
Kennedy spoke about the broader vision of NASCAR’s global aspirations.
“It’s huge. When we talk as a management team about where we think our biggest opportunities for growth lie as a sport, international is always one of the first things that comes to mind,” he said.
Reiterating NASCAR’s commitment to its traditional roots even as it ventures overseas, Kennedy confirmed continued support for the Richmond track.
“We’re still committed to Richmond… We’ve seen some exciting stories come out of this track over the last few years and we’re excited to continue to be there next year, put on a great event for our fans and put a lot of energy and resources into this event,” Kennedy said.
