Although the running back is eligible to be activated from IR next week, the 49ers don’t expect McCaffrey to return until November.

The good news is that the 49ers have started to accelerate the star’s rehabilitation; however, the process is very slow. McCaffrey took part in his first field job this week, which was a step in the right direction.

The running back didn’t experience any surges after his initial work on the field and the 49ers will be careful to keep the process slow in order to avoid any setbacks.

Before the season, Fantasy managers were quick to sign the star running back. Just minutes before the 49ers’ Week 1 game against the New York Jets, news broke that McCaffrey was dealing with a calf injury and an Achilles issue.

It was a devastating loss for San Francisco’s offense. It seemed like things couldn’t get worse with McCaffrey’s injury until this happened. The 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve in Week 2.

On September 30, it was revealed that the running back was suffering from Achilles tendinitis in both legs. Five games into the season, McCaffrey has yet to play a single game for the 49ers in 2024.

The injuries have been brutal for San Francisco. Several starters were sidelined due to injury. In one game, Brandon Aiyuk was the only starting offensive weapon on the floor. George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and McCaffrey were all absent from the contest.

The 28-year-old led the NFL last season with 2,023 yards and was tied for first in the league in touchdowns with 21. McCaffrey’s performance in 2023 earned him the AP Offensive Player of the Year award. year.

San Francisco offensive tackle Trent Williams provided an update Tuesday on McCaffrey’s situation.

“He said he was getting better the last time I talked to him just a day or two ago,” Williams told the Rich Eisen Show. He said the treatment was going well and the rehabilitation was going well. I think he’s extremely confident and thinks he’ll be back in the lineup very soon. I don’t know how soon, but I’m definitely expecting it this year.”

The 49ers will wait until November for their best offensive weapon to return.
