The Amherst Police Department said Officer Kyle Cordero was injured after a truck hit him with a telephone pole.

A New Hampshire police officer was hospitalized after a hit-and-run Thursday, Amherst police said in a news release.

Police said they responded to a crash on Route 101A around 9:30 a.m., where they discovered an “overturned motor vehicle crash” and electrical wires hanging low across the roadway.

As officers attempted to clear the road, the release said, a truck drove through the crash, hitting the low wires and causing a telephone pole to fall. Police said the fallen pole hit Officer Kyle Cordero in the legs and knocked him to the ground.

According to Amherst police, the truck driver continued driving and left the scene. Officer Cordero was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, the release states. Police said he was released Thursday afternoon.

While an investigation into the hit-and-run is ongoing, Amherst police said they have identified the truck involved. They have not named a suspect.

Amherst police expressed “gratitude” to the community and thanked neighbors for their patience.

“This incident highlights the importance of drivers remaining vigilant and obeying traffic laws, particularly in rugged areas,” the statement said.
