The 2-6 Patriots aren’t really ready to contend this season.

That sentiment was validated Monday afternoon after New England traded pass rusher Joshua Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

But could Eliot Wolf and the Patriots actually be looking to bolster their roster before the NFL trade deadline on November 5?

Longtime NFL insider Josina Anderson reported Tuesday that New England could be somewhere between “buyer” and “seller” status.

“I’m told the Patriots are monitoring the trade market to potentially add talent at the WR, DT or T positions on the heels of the New York #Jets’ 25-22 blowout win, per source,” Anderson posted on X Tuesday.

There is a compelling case to be made for New England to seek improvements in all three areas of the roster: wide receiver, defensive tackle and offensive tackle.

New England’s players had a disappointing performance against the Jets on Sunday, with the team dropping a total of five points. Even though Kayshon Boutte bounced back with some game-winning catches in the fourth quarter, the Patriots are still woefully short of playmakers this season.

While New England’s need to strengthen its offensive line is pretty obvious, the Patriots’ most pressing concern might be their run defense. Even with New England’s defense rebounding against the Jets, the Patriots have still given up more than 140 rushing yards in four of their last five games.

Given some of the bargains that have already been made (Carolina dealt WR Diontae Johnson and a sixth-round pick to Baltimore for a fifth-round pick), New England could look to take advantage of a trade buyers.

But given the uphill climb the Patriots still face on a rebuilding roster, Wolf and his staff may have to be selective when it comes to both scouring the market and dealing players already on their roster. list.

“They’re open for business and they’ll listen to anything,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said Sunday on NBC Sports Boston’s Patriots Pregame Live. “I think the ones you want to look at are players who might be on a second contract and deeper into their career where it’s a little hard to see these guys becoming major pieces of the puzzle in two or three years when the program is where they were hoping that would be the case.
