PARIS (AP) — Competition at the Paris Olympics officially opened Wednesday with soccer and rugby sevens matches. Meanwhile, other athletes got a tour of the venues where their gold medal dreams could become reality.
Across France, fields, courts and pools welcomed athletes who have been working for years to achieve this. Beach volleyball players hit the sand at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, where they will compete on one of the most iconic playing fields in Olympic history.
Spain and Morocco had a taste of victory in football, while rugby gave the starting signal for several hopefuls.
There was plenty to see on the first day of competition. The opening ceremony will not take place until Friday.
