Thanksgiving is a time to show gratitude, gather with loved ones, and enjoy lots of delicious food.
But it is also a day known for parades. And while New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade may be the most famous, Chicagoans have their own topical tradition.
The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade will mark its 90th anniversary this year as marching bands, equestrian groups and other performers wake up early and march through State Street. Special guests include Emmy-winning actress Lynn Whitfield, known for her roles in “The Josephine Baker Story” and “The Chi,” as well as country music artists Reyna Roberts and Donnie Lee Strickland.
There will also be festive floats as well as performances from the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago, Lajkonik Song and Dance Ensemble and Ballet Folklorico Sones Mexicanos, among others.
“The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is more than just a celebration; “It’s an opportunity to share the incredible stories that make our city unique,” said Dan Mulka, executive director of the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade Foundation, in a press release. “…This event is a testament to the spirit and of the unity of our community, and we”I am honored to continue this tradition.
While visitors are certainly encouraged, there is an option for those who prefer to witness the festivities from the comfort of their own home. The parade will be broadcast live on Pluto TV this year.
The parade runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and runs along State Street from Ida B. Wells Drive to Randolph Street.
