A charming video of a “super smart” Yorkshire terrier puppy performing a “parallel park” move has captured the hearts of millions on TikTok.
The clip, shared by user @vedranaweahomes on November 13, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times and showcases the little dog’s peculiar habit of lining up perpendicular to its owner when wanting to be picked up .
The caption superimposed on the video humorously asks, “Does anyone else’s dog parallel park when he wants to be picked up?”
The footage shows the Yorkie, named Rolo, looking at the camera while an off-screen voice says, “Ready? Come on.” Rolo then quickly gets into position, as if he were parking a toy car.
It’s unclear why the Yorkie in the viral clip uses this tactic when he wants to be picked up.
However, “puppies, like all animals, learn by doing what works for them. They will do what is effective, from their point of view,” noted an article for VCA, the veterinary hospital chain, written by the veterinarians Debra Horwitz and Gary Landsberg. as well as licensed veterinary technician Monique Feyrecilde.
“Puppies will repeat behaviors that produce good results. If it leads to a treat, attention, toy, desired interaction, the ability to explore, sniff, or run, the puppy will do it again in the future,” can – we read in the article. note.
Every interaction you have with a puppy serves as a form of training. “Potty training, house manners, and social experiences are all forms of training you’ll do with your puppy from the moment he or she first comes home,” the article states.
Teaching puppies through praise and rewards (positive reinforcement) is the most “effective and safest” way to train them, veterinary experts have said.
“Waiting for the puppy to do something you don’t want and then trying to punish the behavior can lead to problems such as avoidance, fear and confusion,” the VCA article warns.
