Would-be robber shot and killed while fighting for gun: police

A man was killed Saturday afternoon during a struggle over his gun after trying to rob someone in the New City neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

A 43-year-old man was working outside in the 1500 block of West Garfield Boulevard shortly before 3 p.m. when a man approached him and pulled out a gun, demanding his property, police said.

There was then a struggle over the weapon, and the suspected armed robber was shot in the torso. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, but later died. His identity has not yet been revealed.

Police said no one was in custody and they were investigating the shooting.
