Live: Brawl in Plashet Park leaves young man dead, two teenagers hospitalised

A murder investigation has been launched following a fatal stabbing in an east London park. Metropolitan Police officers were called to Newham at 7.38pm on Saturday 27 July to reports of a fight in Plashet Park.

Police attended the scene and discovered a young man with knife wounds. Despite first aid from police, London Air Ambulance and LAS paramedics, the man sadly died at the scene.




An autopsy will be carried out in due course. Police believe they know the identity of the man, who is believed to be 20 years old. Enquiries are underway to identify and inform his family.

Two teenagers were also found at the scene, one with stab wounds and the other with a head injury. Both were taken to hospital, but their lives are not in danger.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with the killing, the Metropolitan Police said.

Where did it happen?

The stabbing took place in Plashet Park, Newham, east London. London Ambulance Service was called to the junction of Tennyson Avenue and Woodpark Grove (which runs alongside the park). Video from the scene shows paramedics and police officers treating a person near the basketball courts, just north of Tennyson Avenue. London Air Ambulance was seen landing on the other side of the courts, near the cricket nets.

Statement from the London Ambulance Service

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said:

“We were called at 7.38pm on Saturday 27 July to reports of a stabbing at the junction of Woodhouse Grove and Tennyson Avenue, Manor Park. We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, an incident response officer and a clinical team manager. We also dispatched the London Air Ambulance.

“We treated three people on site and took two to hospital. Unfortunately, despite all the efforts of our teams, one patient was pronounced dead on site.”

The London Air Ambulance was seen at the scene in a video posted online via X. Police officers and paramedics are seen tending to a person near the Plashet Park basketball court with a temporary sheet set up as they carry out their work. Across the court, the red helicopter has landed, seen at the end of the online video.

Police urge witnesses to come forward

Superintendent Dion Brown urged witnesses to come forward. She said: “I urge any witnesses or anyone with information to share what they know with police. We are committed to working with the local community to establish what happened and bring those responsible for this senseless and brutal act of violence to justice.”

“Residents will see additional police officers working in the area today and in the coming days. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to them. They are here to support you and your community.”

A video of the scene was released and posted on X, formerly Twitter. It shows paramedics and police officers attending the scene at Plashet Park, near the basketball court and cricket nets on the north-east side. The London Air Ambulance is also present, landing just across the pitches.

Met Superintendent promises ‘exceptionally thorough and forensic’ investigation

Superintendent Dion Brown, one of Newham’s most senior police officers, deplored the tragic loss of life and promised that the police investigation would be exceptionally thorough. She said:

“I know that this tragic and violent loss of life will cause deep distress within the local community. I share their sadness and concern, and extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young man who was killed.

“A murder investigation has been launched and is continuing apace this morning, with the assistance of skilled detectives, supported by local officers and specialists from across the Metropolitan Police. This investigation will be exceptionally thorough and forensic in nature.
