HARRISON. new York — One person was killed when a small plane crashed Thursday evening on Interstate-684 in Westchester County, New York.
New York State Police said two people were on board the plane when it crashed around 7 p.m. local time in the town of Harrison. The plane landed in an uneven area that separates the north and southbound lanes of the highway.
The victim’s name was not released and the condition of the second person on board the plane was not immediately clear. No one on the ground was injured.
According to FlightAware, the pilot took off from Linden Airport in New Jersey and was heading to Westchester County Airport, located about 1.5 miles from where he crashed.
FlightAware lists the plane’s owner as Altisky Leasing One LLC, of Smyrna, Tennessee.
New York State Police said the highway was closed on the north side at Exit 2 and on the south side at Exit 3, adding that local detours were in place. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement that the accident also caused an aviation gas leak, which the state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating. was trying to contain and clean.
