Kamala Harris expected to be sole Democratic presidential candidate ahead of official party vote

Vice President Kamala Harris is the only presidential candidate qualified to seek the Democratic presidential nomination, the Democratic National Committee said Tuesday.

No other major Democrats had indicated they were considering seeking the party’s nomination, but the DNC’s announcement officially clears the way for the vice president to run unopposed for the nomination, according to The Associated Press.

The move comes after President Biden announced he was suspending his re-election campaign.

Delegates to the party’s national convention will vote to formally ratify the nomination under a new online voting process the party adopted last week. Voting will begin Thursday and end Monday, the statement said, adding that votes for anyone other than Harris will be counted as “present.”
