The band released a statement on social media on Friday citing singer Steven Tyler’s vocal injury as the reason for their retirement.

Boston-born rock phenomenon Aerosmith will no longer tour due to a vocal cord injury to lead singer Steven Tyler.

The band announced the news on social media Friday, announcing that they were canceling their upcoming shows due to the 76-year-old singer’s health issues. In September, Tyler fractured his larynx, prompting the band to postpone the remainder of their “Peace Out” farewell tour.

“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the band wrote. “He has spent months working tirelessly to get his voice back to where it was before his injury. We have watched him struggle despite having the best medical team at his side. Unfortunately, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”

The group called the decision “heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary” and said anyone who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will receive an automatic refund. They asked anyone who purchased tickets through third-party resale sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub and VividSeats to contact those groups for refund information.

“It was in 1970 that a spark of inspiration became Aerosmith. Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark has been ignited and burning for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history.”

“It’s been an honor to have our music be a part of yours. In every club, on every massive tour, and in moments both grand and private, you’ve given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.”

“We have always wanted to wow you at our shows. As you know, Steven’s voice is a one-of-a-kind instrument. He has spent months working tirelessly to regain his pre-injury voice. We have watched him struggle despite having the best medical team at his side. Unfortunately, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary decision as a band of brothers to retire from the touring scene.”

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who was eager to hit the road with us one last time. We are grateful to our team of experts, our incredible crew and the thousands of talented people who made our historic races possible. A final thank you to you, the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Keep dreaming. You made our dreams come true.”
