A koi fish gets a little too excited when its owner goes to feed it

A koi fish named Snappy has delighted social media with his hilarious reaction every time his owner goes to the pond to feed him, as seen in a video that has quickly gone viral.

The hilarious video, shared on TikTok in August under the username @snappythekoi, shows the poster approaching the pond with food. Snappy immediately notices the owner and loses his mind. The fish seems so excited that he jumps out of the water and almost out of the pond, so he’s first in line when the food is dropped off.

“My Koi Snappy gets a little excited every time we go to feed him,” reads the caption posted with the clip.

A caption shared with the clip reads: “This is our lively koi, despite being fed two or three times a day… you would think she was starving. I will now rename her Kamikaze…”

Fish are much smarter than you might think. PetMD says they not only have the ability to detect a change in their environment, such as when the tank is rearranged, but can also tell if a fish has been replaced.

In fact, studies have shown that fish can tell the difference between other fish, even those of the same species, and therefore know when their tank mates have been replaced with new ones.

But that’s not all. Some studies show that fish also have the ability to distinguish people’s faces, although this is not necessary from an ecological point of view since we do not share the same living space.

The video quickly went viral on TikTok and has so far received over 4.9 million views and 704,000 likes.

One user, Roger Graf40, commented: “Just an idea. Have you ever thought that Snappy could be a Magikarp that is so close to evolving?”

Xuzzbut said: “See how he almost died? Very quiet, very cute, very reserved.”

Silly Noah wrote: “In my head this is how we evolved from the ocean to humans lol.”

And Prinren wrote: “Snappy trying to fly is all the personality of a golden retriever in a fish.”

Newsweek reached out to Snappythekoi for comment via TikTok comments and was unable to verify the details of the case.
