A passenger tried to divert a domestic flight from Mexico to the United States, according to the airline Volaris.

A passenger on a domestic flight in Mexico attempted to divert the plane to the United States before being arrested by the crew, the airline announced on social media on Sunday.

Volaris said the crew of Flight 3041 from El Bajio to Tijuana managed to arrest the passenger before the flight was diverted to Guadalajara, in central Mexico. Once arrived on scene, the passenger was handed over to the authorities.

The rest of the passengers and crew then continued to their destination in Tijuana, on the border with the United States.

“Volaris regrets the inconvenience caused by this situation,” the airline said in a statement on X. “For Volaris, the safety of our passengers and crew is the highest priority.”

It was not immediately clear why the passenger diverted the plane. The airline did not say at what point in the flight the incident occurred.

The airline said it filed the suit to ensure the passenger faces the full brunt of the law.
