For years, gamers have wanted a sequel to Okami, the beautiful and innovative action RPG from Hideki Kamiya and Clover Studio, a now-shuttered division within Capcom. Now, after 18 years, gamers are getting that wish, after Kamiya’s new studio CLOVERS and Capcom announced a sequel at The Game Awards.

Okami 2 was presented at The Game Awards with a brief teaser, officially lifting the veil on Kamiya’s new CLOVERS studio and announcing a return to the world of Okami 18 years after the original game’s release on PS2. The trailer showed the tiniest glimpse of Amaterasu running through a field, with painterly style intact.

An Okami sequel announced at the Game Awards. Okami was first released in 2006, and although it sold poorly, it became a cult classic over time.

Game rewards

Okami is a cult classic game from Capcom released for the PS2 in 2006, at the very end of the PS2’s life. The game was loved by critics and fans, who praised its unique painterly art style and innovative action gameplay, but unfortunately sold quite poorly initially. Kamiya expressed in a recent interview that he would have liked to have had a better team working on the game and that the final product was a bit lacking.

Kamiya eventually left Capcom after Okami’s release and founded PlatinumGames, the studio that developed games like Bayonetta, Vanquish, Astral Chain, and Nier: Automata. He parted ways with the company in 2023 and is now back with CLOVERS, which appears to be named after his former Clover Studio.

No release date has been given for the Okami sequel, nor the platforms.
