Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is considering a return to politics as New York City Mayor Eric Adams faces calls for his resignation after being indicted on federal charges, according to a recent report.
Cuomo, if he runs for mayor of New York, will likely face opposition from labor unions, business groups and established political leaders, according to Politico.
“If he became mayor, there would be great tension between him, the legislature and the governor, which I think would not be in the best interest of the City of New York,” the president told Politico of State Senate, Liz Krueger. “If people are looking for who should be the next mayor of New York, look beyond Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo. There are eight million more people to talk to.”

But Cuomo isn’t the only candidate likely to try to run for mayor. New York State Attorney General Letitia James also has supporters within New York City politics.
“I’m not giving my opinion or suggesting that anyone would run for mayor,” New York Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs said of James’ prospects of running for mayor. “I really like him personally. It’s a possibility. The mayor hasn’t gone anywhere.”
Some warn that Cuomo’s team is highly organized and that he could be formidable if he returns to power. Cuomo was easily elected to three terms as governor, but resigned in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal. He was replaced by Kathy Hochul, who was elected to a full term in 2022.
“This happened with very smart, very organized, very strong-willed people,” former Gov. David Paterson said. “They’re actually most dangerous when they’re in charge. There’s certainly a fear among people who know him that he could be that way.”

“He has some scars from the scandal – as we all do,” Paterson said. “I think there would be more pressure on him to be the kinder, gentler Andrew Cuomo.”
Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi told Fox News Digital that talk of him entering a mayoral race was premature.
“This is all premature, but let’s call it what it is: Hochul is trying to manipulate the situation to avoid Tish James running against her,” he said. “The business and labor communities are hoping that Cuomo will run to restore his skills and leadership. Hochul has already lost the House once, and she should focus on correcting her many mistakes rather than obvious political games and amateurs.”
He also touted Cuomo’s accomplishments in office and put “New Yorkers before politics and politicians” in a statement to Politico.
