If you have trouble with Friday Wordle, you may be relieved to know that even the inventor of the game often finds it a challenge.
“[My partner] and I play it together on the couch every morning,” said Josh Wardle, a software engineer based in New York. News week in January 2022. “She will consistently achieve this in three attempts, which is much, much better than I could ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”
Years after dreaming up the initial concept, Welsh-born Wardle perfected Word during COVID-19 lockdowns before making it public in October 2021.
After its public debut, Word exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times purchased it shortly after for an undisclosed seven-figure price and it became the publication’s most popular game.
A large part of WordThe appeal of is its simplicity. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Gray tiles behind a letter indicate that it is not part of the word at all; yellow means that the letter is present, but it is in the wrong position; while green tells players that the letter is in the word and in the right place.
Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, has already provided useful advice for Word players in an interview with News week.
“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting with words that include commonly used vowels, for example e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences could be helpful.
“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for example, may not be the best choice. You get more feedback after a few guesses. Users need to rely on some phonetic knowledge to refine or eliminate certain words they might think of.
