If you succeed today Word is not checked off your to-do list, News week has all the information you need to help you achieve a victory.
The popular puzzle was invented by Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software engineer based in New York. He perfected Word during the COVID-19 lockdowns before releasing it to the general public in October 2021.
After its public debut, Word exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times purchased it for an undisclosed seven-figure price, and soon after, it became the publication’s most popular game.
For the uninitiated, Word players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. The gray tiles behind each letter indicate that they are not part of the word at all; yellow means that the letter is present, but it is in the wrong position; while green tells players that the letter is in the word and in the right place.
Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, has already given some advice to Word players in an interview with News week.
“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting with words that include commonly used vowels, for example e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences could be helpful.
“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for example, may not be the best choice. You get more feedback after a few guesses. Users need to rely on some phonetic knowledge to refine or eliminate certain words they might think of.
