MILLBRAE — San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who authorities said was brandishing a gun outside a Safeway Sunday afternoon.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the 36-year-old man they arrested was a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm. Authorities said officers arrested him on suspicion of carrying a weapon, possession of a weapon by a person convicted of a felony, possession of ammunition by a felon, carrying a loaded weapon on a person or in a vehicle, possession of a concealed weapon in a car and child abuse.
Officers stopped him as he was driving south on El Camino Real, and the man surrendered without incident, authorities said. They added that they found a loaded gun in the car after stopping him.
Officers responded to the Safeway in the 500 block of El Camino Real around 1 p.m. for a report of a man brandishing a gun in the parking lot. The man then fled the scene, authorities said.
Authorities did not immediately say what prompted the child abuse charge.
The Camino Real was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes.
