Asda is offering a 10% discount to shoppers to help ease the cost of living crisis, but only for certain businesses.
The offer applies to food and soft drinks, George clothing, home furnishings, toys, gifts and and items from its opticians.
If you work in the NHS, emergency services, social services, the social sector or armed forces, you can get a 10% discount by showing your blue light card at checkout.
Since 2008, key employees have been able to get discounts in many stores by drawing the card.
With inflation at 9% for 40 years, Asda’s deal will not save you quite as much as it seems, but people still need all the help they can get at the moment.
Asda’s Chief of Staff and Corporate Affairs Hayley Tatum said: ‘Family budgets are under tremendous pressure right now – with our income tracking showing household incomes falling by £ 16 a week in March and will fall further.
‘Bringing back the Blue Light rebate and eliminating the qualifying period for our own peer discount are further ways we can support our customers and colleagues, alongside our ongoing efforts to reduce prices and invest in our peer pay.’
Tom Dalby, CEO of Blue Light Card, said: ‘We are really proud to work with ASDA. With rising living costs, I hope this exclusive 10% discount helps families and individuals across the UK with everything from the big grocery store to new school clothes.
“Asda has always done so much to show its appreciation to NHS staff and other frontline staff, and this partnership will support millions of blue light workers in the country.”
This comes after Iceland introduced a deal for over 60s offering a 10% discount on products on Tuesday.
The offer also applies to the sister store Madvarehuset and will be introduced from 24 May.
Iceland’s CEO Richard Walker said: ‘The cost of living crisis has made support for these customers even more important, which is why I am proud that we are finding new ways to support them, including the launch of this rebate.
‘We hope it will help all those in this age group to cut costs where they can.’
