Bauer delivers Manchester First Street foundations contract
Bauer Technologies has been awarded a six week piling programme for the fourth phase of a mixed-use development in Manchester city centre.
Bauer Group subsidiary Bauer Technologies is working on the project on behalf of principal contractor Bam Construction. Client Ask Real State is developing a £105M, 12,200m2 office building on Plot 9a in the First Street mixed-use neighbourhood, which is a regeneration project being delivered in phases.
Designed by Jon Matthews Architects, Plot 9a will feature winter gardens, roof terraces and extensive landscaping. The developer also aims to use the latest technologies to achieve net zero carbon in operation standards. The sustainability strategy for the building is being conducted together with consultant Cundall.
Bauer Technologies is undertaking the piling programme over a six week period, splitting the work into two phases.
Bauer commenced the first, 3.5 week phase of works in early October 2022, with phase two scheduled for late January 2023 and expected to last 2.5 weeks.
Bauer is designing all foundation elements, which include 206m of contiguous flight auger (CFA) wall, using 76, 600mm diameter; 168, 750mm diameter; and 114, 600mm diameter bearing piles.
The scope of works also includes a working test pile, as well as foundation piles for one of the largest luffing jib tower cranes in Europe, which will be installed by the site team into the Sherwood Sandstone that underlies the site by approximately 8m depth.
Bauer Technologies managing director Michael Jones said: “With Bauer Technologies being the first geotechnical contractor in the world to be accredited with the BES 6001 sustainability certificate, this project – being designed completely with sustainability at its heart – aligns perfectly with our own sustainability goals.”
He added: “Bauer Technologies passionately believe that sustainability doesn’t just start with the building, but also in the work undertaken to construct it. As such we are confident that we can undertake our scope of works sustainably, as well as on time and to the complete satisfaction of our client.”
First Street’s Plot 9a, which has been let to the Government Property Agency, will be finished in August 2024.
