A British clergyman has died after a night of sex and drugs with a Belgian priest who has since been arrested on drug-related charges, Belgian authorities said Saturday.
The 69-year-old man, whose identity has not been revealed, was spending the evening with his 60-year-old colleague in a clergy house in Kalmthout, north of Antwerp, on Thursday when he fell ill, indicated the floor.
Shortly after midnight, the Belgian priest called emergency services, who were unable to resuscitate his partner.
“It appears that the two men consumed ecstasy and poppers together and had sex. Two ecstasy pills were also found,” the prosecution said.
An investigation is underway and the autopsy could not immediately provide any conclusive information on the exact cause of death, he added. The priest, aged 60, was questioned by the investigating judge and placed in police custody.
He faces charges of drug trafficking resulting in death.
Pope Francis was in Belgium on Saturday and met with 17 survivors of clergy sexual abuse suffering from trauma, during the meeting he says the church “would offer all possible assistance” to help the victims.
