Postseason baseball is often accompanied by some animosity, and tensions erupted during the Yankees’ victory in Game 4 of the series against the Royals in the ALDS.
Royals second baseman Michael Massey hit an unassisted 3-6 double in the bottom of the sixth inning, however, the game ended with the benches clearing. Anthony Volpe threw a forearm to Maikel Garcia during his hard slide to second.
“The stakes are high,” Volpe said. “Everyone plays hard. Everyone is trying to win. They are playing for their season. SO [Garcia] came in hard.
Garcia stood up to face Volpe and the shortstop patted him on the back several times, essentially chasing him away. Then, the Kansas City Jazz’s public enemy No. 1, Chisholm Jr., began responding to Garcia, leading the benches to clear.
Garcia has also been the subject of controversy in this series. After the Royals won Game 2, the third baseman tweeted, “Don’t celebrate too soon,” in response to a video of Carlos Rodon’s heated reactions after striking out the team early in the game. first. The 24-year-old went on to tweet, “We’re not afraid of anyone.”
“I just felt like he tried to hurt Volpe because he was a sore loser,” Chisholm said. He talked a lot on Instagram and Twitter and all that. I do the same thing, but I’m not going to try to hurt someone if they win a match. And I didn’t like it, so I told him, ‘We don’t do that on this side,’ and I will always defend my guys.
Chisholm Jr. may have lit the fire in this series by saying the Royals “just got lucky” in their Game 2 victory. The third baseman heard boos from the crowd all week in Kansas City and probably won’t make any more fans after the “sore loser” comment.
Volpe – who was in the midst of controversy – was one of the Yankees’ constant at-bats in this series. The shortstop was 3 for 12 with four walks in the four-game set.
“I’m just trying to make my pitch and get some good momentum going. You can’t control the results, but I feel like if I keep doing it, I can continue to help the team.
The Yankees will be watching closely on Saturday night as they take home the winner of Game 5 between the Guardians and Tigers.
