President Biden will ask Congress to impose term limits and a code of conduct on the Supreme Court while drafting limits on presidential immunity, a White House official said.
Biden will discuss the proposed reforms in a speech Monday at the LBJ Presidential Library commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, the official said. Biden also discussed his desire for Supreme Court reform in an op-ed published Monday morning.
“I served as a United States senator for 36 years, including as chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. I oversaw more Supreme Court nominations as senator, vice president and president than anyone alive today,” Biden said in the op-ed published by The Washington Post. “I have great respect for our institutions and the separation of powers. What is happening now is not normal and it undermines public trust in the Court’s decisions, including those that impact individual liberties. We now find ourselves in a breach,” Biden wrote.
