A man convicted of plotting to murder his then-wife more than 40 years ago has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 22 years in prison.
Allen Morgan, 74, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Monday.
The man was having an affair with his current wife – Margaret Morgan, 75 – when his ex-wife Carol was found hacked to death in the grocery store they both ran in Linslade, BedfordshireAugust 13, 1981.
It was unanimously condemned by a murder conspiracy jury in June.
Margaret Morgan, who left her husband and moved in with Allen Morgan after Carol’s death, was also charged with conspiracy but was later acquitted.
Police initially believed Carol had been the victim of a burglary gone wrong, as her husband had taken their two stepchildren to the cinema in Luton to see a double bill on the day she was murdered.
But a cold case investigation in 2018 revealed that a witness, aged 17 at the time, linked Allen Morgan to the murder.
An unknown assailant struck around 7pm that day and Carol was killed in the store after she closed the shop.
The killer, who has never been identified, used a heavy weapon to kill Carol, causing fatal injuries to her body and skull, the court was told.
