Cat Glover, singer and dancer known for her collaboration with Prince, has died at the age of 60.
“It is with great sadness that we officially announce the passing of Catherine Vernice Glover, aka “Cat”. Please respect the privacy of her children, family and friends during this difficult time,” read a statement posted on her Facebook page.
No cause of death was given, but the statement promised more information would follow.
Catherine Vernice Glover was born in Chicago on July 23, 1964, and began dancing at a young age. As “Pat & Cat” with Patrick Allen, she earned two perfect four-star ratings on “Star Search” in 1986. After their winning streak on the talent show, she received offers to tour with David Bowie and Prince, choosing the latter, her hero.
Glover performed with Prince in the late 1980s, becoming a prominent fixture at his concerts. She had a prominent role in the 1987 concert film “Sign O’ the Times” and the music video for “U Got the Look.” She also rapped on the tracks “Alphabet Street” and “Cindy C.”
Glover, drummer Sheila E., and singer/keyboardist Boni Boyer formed Prince’s new band after the enigmatic artist split from his Purple Rain-era group, The Revolution. The new group disbanded after the release of Lovesexy in 1989. A planned solo album for Glover was never completed, with Prince now focusing on the Batman soundtrack.
She continued to work as a dancer and choreographer for years, staying in touch with Prince until his death in 2016, according to an interview with The Chicago Crusader.
