Cause of death of John Hunt’s wife and daughters confirmed as inquest hears chilling details and desperate text

The wife of BBC racing commentator John Hunt has died from stab wounds, while two of their daughters died from injuries caused by crossbow bolts, an inquest has heard.

Carol Hunt and two of her daughters, Hannah and Louise, were killed in an attack earlier this month. Hertfordshire Crown Court heard that Hannah Hunt texted someone to say she had been “tied up” at the family home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on July 9.

The text instructed the anonymous citizen to call police, telling them the person responsible was at home, a medical examiner said during the brief hearing.

Ms Hunt was then able to call police, reporting that she had been shot, as had her mother and sister. She gave her address before the call was disconnected, the hearing was told.

When officers arrived they found her alive in the front doorway of the house with a crossbow bolt still in her chest, Hertfordshire senior coroner Geoffrey Sullivan said.

Investigators will wait for medical staff to confirm Kyle Clifford is well enough to be questioned before they can question him over the triple murder, the PA news agency reported this morning.

Paying tribute to the three victims, Mr Hunt and his third daughter Amy previously said: “The devastation we are experiencing cannot be described in words.”

In a further statement read to Sky Sports Racing viewers by colleague Matt Chapman, Mr Hunt paid tribute to his “magnificently inspiring” surviving daughter.

He said: “Despite the horrific evil that has swept through our lives, causing devastation on an unimaginable scale, the counter-argument has been the breathtaking messages of support, some of which have yet to be read.

“My eldest daughter Amy has been a wonderful inspiration with her control and support of me, which I try, I strive, to emulate.

“Every message felt so important, like a reassuring hug. We know people are worried about us. We will get through this.”
