Chicago police officer shot and injured

A Chicago police officer was shot and killed Monday night on the South Side, sources said.

The officer was shot around 8 p.m. near the intersection of East 82nd Street and South Ingleside Avenue. No additional details about the shooting were immediately available, but sources said the officer was in critical condition.

Around 8:30 p.m., police cars blocked off much of South Cottage Grove Avenue near the University of Chicago Medical Center, where the officer was being treated.

Shortly before 9 p.m., a man in a white coat emerged from the emergency room and motioned for a crowd of officers to follow him around the block inside the hospital.

Officers inside the hospital could be seen reacting to the situation inside the hospital.

Police did not immediately announce a news conference Monday evening.
