Chicago winter parking ban begins Sunday with flyers and warnings – NBC Chicago

Chicago motorists have gotten used to overnight parking bans on snow-covered roads, but residents got a reprieve Sunday morning.

The ban goes into effect on December 1 each year, but instead of issuing tickets and towing vehicles, city law enforcement officials have instead placed warning fliers on cars that were violating the order on Sunday.

The flyers reminded motorists of the city’s policy prohibiting overnight parking on designated snow roads, but did not include a citation. The grace period was granted because of the holiday weekend, according to a city spokesperson.

Officials say any designated snow route prohibits parking when there is more than two inches of snow on the ground. Motorists are also not allowed to park on these streets between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. each day between December 1 and April 1, under a city ordinance.

Violators receive citations and vehicles are towed.

If a vehicle is towed under this policy, residents can call 311 or visit the city’s website for more information.
