Elon Musk’s close relationship with President-elect Donald Trump will eventually end, according to former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
The Republican lawmaker, who once supported Trump but has since been one of the few to oppose him within the party, believes Trump’s blame game tactics will be the cause of an argument.
In an interview with ABC News’ Jonathan Karl on Sunday, he said: “It ends with Trump believing that something is wrong, that he needs someone to blame, and Musk becomes the person to blame .”
Christie clarified that “no one knows how long this will take.”
The two billionaires grew closer this year after Elon Musk’s unwavering support for Trump, from creating a Super PAC to hosting political rallies in his honor.
“Sometimes it’s hard for people to understand how intoxicating it can be for some people,” Christie told ABC.
Just this week, Musk showed what his influence could look like in Trump’s second term after he derailed a bipartisan spending bill, risking a government shutdown. It was only hours before the deadline, after two bills failed, that a deal was reached.
“The people who sit in the middle even with Trump have a shelf life, and that shelf life is influenced by outside events, as President Johnson is discovering right now,” the former governor said.
Many Democrats have teased the two men, calling Musk the real president in this relationship.
“The political and mainstream media puppets all received their new instructions yesterday and are now repeating the same message to drive a wedge between @realDonaldTrump and me,” Musk wrote Friday before the passed bill was introduced. “They will fail.”
