The Chicago Cubs made a series of roster moves Sunday, activating pitcher Jordan Wicks from the injured list and recalling infielder Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa.
The team also freed up a spot for Wicks on its 40-man roster by recalling infielder Nick Madrigal from Iowa and placing him on the 60-day injured list with a broken pinky.
Wicks to celebrate 25th anniversaryth He celebrated his birthday by pitching for the Cubs in their final series against the Washington Nationals, the team announced.
He has been out since mid-June after making a brief return from the injured list, pitching just five innings in two appearances in the team’s bullpen. In 28 innings this season, he is 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA, striking out 32 batters and allowing 10 walks.
Mastrobuoni split his time between the major leagues and minor leagues this season. He appeared in 43 games with the Cubs, hitting .200/.255/.233 with three RBIs and three doubles. He had four home runs, 22 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 54 games with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.
Madrigal hasn’t played since being hit in the hand by a pitch in his first appearance with Triple-A Iowa, breaking the pinkie finger on his left hand. Madrigal has driven in 10 runs and 19 hits in 51 games with the Cubs this season, batting .221/.280/.256.
The Cubs enter September on a five-game winning streak and in the midst of a 7-1 road trip that leaves them four games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League with 26 games remaining in the season.
The first pitch between the Cubs and Nationals will be thrown at 12:35 p.m.
