Cyclist fatally hit by SUV on Lower West Side ruled it an accident, medical examiner says

The death of a man who was fatally struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle on the Lower West Side late last month was ruled an accident Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office .

A Jeep SUV struck the still-unidentified cyclist in the 1900 block of South Union Avenue on Oct. 27 around 4:14 a.m., according to Chicago police. The driver of the Jeep fled the scene.

The unconscious cyclist was taken to Stroger Hospital with a head injury, police said. He died there Wednesday evening.

An autopsy performed Saturday showed the man died from complications related to “craniocerebral injuries” caused by a motor vehicle striking a bicyclist and was ruled accidental, according to the medical examiner’s office. The medical examiner’s office said the victim was 64 years old but did not release his identity.

A police spokesman said on Saturday that no suspects were in custody and that the police major accident investigation unit was investigating.
