Around 100 firefighters have been dispatched to the scene of a blaze in east London, with footage showing the entire street covered in smoke.

15 fire engines are parked on Third Avenue, Dagenham, this afternoon with two houses on fire.

London Fire Brigade is urging people to avoid the area as they battle the blaze.

An LFB spokesperson said: “We currently have 15 fire engines and approximately 100 firefighters attending a fire on Third Avenue in #Dagenham, where two houses are currently on fire. Please avoid the area and keep windows closed due to smoke.”

The fire is now “under control” but “hot spots” remain

The teams brought the fire under control, according to the LFB.

However, the fire is not completely extinguished and firefighters continue to fight.

Station Commander Darren McTernan, who attended the scene, said: “Crews are working hard to bring the fire under control.

“We ask residents in the area to keep windows and doors closed due to the significant amounts of smoke produced by the fire.

“Roads are closed and the area is very congested. People are urged to avoid the area if possible.”

Local resident David Carter told Express.co.uk he believed the fire may have started in the garden of a property. However, we have not yet been able to independently verify this.
