DALLAS– A Dallas police officer is dead and two others are injured after a shooting in Oak Cliff Thursday night, Dallas police said.
Dallas police responded to a distress call from an officer in the 900 block of E Ledbetter Drive just after 10 p.m. Thursday.
Responding officers found an officer with gunshot wounds in a patrol vehicle, a Dallas Police Department spokesperson said at a news conference early Friday morning.
Shots were exchanged between the police officers who intervened and a suspect present at the scene. Two police officers were injured by gunfire.
All three officers were transported to local hospitals. One officer died, another is in critical condition and the third is in stable condition, the spokesman said.
The suspect then fled the scene. Dallas police pursued the suspect and the chase ended in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville.
Dallas police said the suspect exited the vehicle with a “long gun” before officers shot the suspect, killing him.
Lewisville police said Dallas officers led the pursuit on northbound IH-35 and that no Lewisville officers were involved.
CBS News Texas crews on scene at Baylor University Medical Center and Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Dallas overnight say both have a heavy police presence.
A CBS News Texas photojournalist at Methodist Dallas Medical Center said police officers lined up at the entrance to salute.
Officers left the hospital in a procession honoring the officer killed in the shooting at 4 a.m. Friday.
