Damian Lewis takes to the stage at intimate London gig

Damian Lewis has swapped the screen for the concert hall as he played songs from his upcoming debut album at an intimate show in London – where he reportedly sang some emotional lyrics about his late wife Helen McCrory.

The 51-year-old British actor, known for starring in the television dramas Billions, Band Of Brothers and Homeland, performed to a sold-out crowd on Thursday at London’s Omeara venue.

Dressed all in black for the occasion, Lewis was supported by a band as he sang and played the guitar at the gig, which came before he is set to take to the stage at Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire on Sunday.

His actress wife Helen died in April 2021 aged 52 after being diagnosed with cancer, and Damian is believed to have paid tribute to the late Peaky Blinders star on stage.

According to The Sun, he sang in one emotional track: ‘You and me should be together ’til the end. So bye bye, baby, I can’t wait to see your smile again.’

Another track, which he performed near the end of his set, seemed to also relate to losing a partner.

Damian sang: ‘She comes as a blackbird, she comes as a fox. She sits at the window, she sings from a rock.

‘She’s the moon in the day and the sun that shines in the dark. She rests in me and she rests in shade. She’s my joy, she’s my pain and she rained on me.’

As well as original tracks, Damian performed covers of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon and Tom Waits’ Little Trip To Heaven.

The publication reports that Damian admitted ahead of the second track: ‘I shouldn’t have agreed to this song. I shouldn’t have agreed to the mascara either,’ suggesting it was an emotional song for him.

Damian’s representatives have been contacted by MailOnline.

The gig also featured singer-songwriter Cherise as a special guest.

Having played classical guitar since the age of 13, Lewis graduated to the steel string acoustic after being inspired by Elvis Presley and spent his early 20s busking in London.

After rediscovering the guitar during lockdown, he met with various London-based musicians, including Giacomo Smith, to record a currently untitled debut album that will be released next year.

Damian previously said he was ‘looking forward’ to getting out on stage to play the songs he had written and recorded for the album.

He had added that it would ‘be good to be back on stage, this time with a guitar in my hand’.

This summer, Damian was made a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to drama and charity.

He said both he and his late wife, Helen, were ‘thrilled’.

In recent weeks, Damian has been pictured with US musician Alison Mosshart, from the bands The Kills and The Dead Weather, with them confirming a new romance.

When Helen died, Damian revealed how his late wife had urged him to find love again, telling him and their son and daughter that she wanted ‘Daddy to have lots of girlfriends.’

Damian recently got the seal of approval from his new rock singer girlfriend’s mother who says she can’t wait to meet the Homeland star.

The pair met through friends while hanging out in London and have grown increasingly fond of one another, Alison’s mother Vivian, 76, has revealed.

Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com from her home in Florida, Vivian, 76, said: ‘I don’t know how much flak I’m going to get for all of this but of course we are excited for her.

‘They have mutual friends. I don’t know exactly how they met but I’m fine with it. If she’s happy, we are happy. I’m yet to meet him but certainly I’d like to.’

Alison and father-of-two Lewis were first photographed together last month at a swanky fundraising party for London’s National Gallery.
