Wednesday, the Third Night of the Republican National Conventionthe evening was to be devoted to foreign policy.
Vance’s speech, the last of the evening, will be watched with bated breath by Republicans, given his recent surge on the national stage. He is just 39 and wasn’t elected to the Senate until 2022, and his 2016 book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” propelled to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list list this week when former President Donald Trump announced his selection.
Republicans are expected to focus on foreign policy on Wednesday, and Vance’s worldview has become central since his election. In May, he told “Face the Nation”“The United States could learn from some of Hungary’s far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s controversial policies, including how to eliminate what he sees as a left-wing bias in American universities. And at the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, Vance said it would be unrealistic for the United States to continue providing the same level of aid to Ukraine in the future.
The Republican National Convention is taking place during one of the most dramatic political weeks in history. President Biden continues to face calls to withdraw for the Democratic nomination in May, along with the Democratic candidate for the Senate Adam Schiff, Representative of California — a close ally of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — becoming the most senior member of the Senate to call on Mr. Biden to step down.
In addition, both campaigns are in shock after the attack by a gunman Saturday’s assassination attempt of Trump. A the bullet grazed his ear – described by Eric Trump, a “flesh wound”“—and a sniper shot and killed the shooter, identified as a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, but his motive remains unclear days after the shooting. A bystander was also killed, and two other people who were shot are now in stable condition after being in critical condition for several days.
Trump made his first public appearance since the assassination attempt on Monday, the first night of the RNC.
