Democratic Gov. Murphy Defends Harris for Avoiding Media Interviews: ‘Plenty of Time’

New Jersey Gov. Murphy defended Vice President Harris when asked how she could continue to avoid formal press interviews since becoming the Democratic Party’s nominee.

“She’s on a roll,” Murphy said when asked about Harris’ lack of media interviews since becoming her party’s nominee during a CNN appearance Tuesday. “She’s brought joy back to the whole political sphere. There’s going to be plenty of time to do interviews,” he told host Kate Bolduan.

Harris has not held a formal news conference or given an interview since Wednesday, 24 days since becoming the Democratic Party’s nominee. President Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the race.

Murphy responded to former President Trump’s criticism of Harris’ lack of interviews after billionaire Elon Musk interviewed Trump on Monday.

“And God knows one thing about last night, without hearing it, it was not an interview,” Murphy said. “So when she does interviews, she’s going to do them with real journalists like you,” he added, referring to Bolduan.

Murphy said Harris’ choice of running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, was “inspired” and that the campaign had had “an extraordinary few weeks.”

Walz has been the subject of controversy since being named Harris’ running mate for his service in the National Guard. Walz’s 24 years of service in the National Guard have been the subject of extensive media coverage, as questions have mounted about his service record and accusations of “stolen valor” have gained popularity.

The criticism, some from veterans who served alongside Walz, is that Walz retired just months before his battalion was scheduled to deploy to Iraq, as the Middle East war raged after the Sept. 11 attacks. Walz filed his retirement papers at least five months before his battalion was ordered to deploy, according to the Minnesota National Guard.
