President-elect Donald Trump announced Kari Lake as his choice to lead the public media network Voice of America (VOA).
Lake, a former television news anchor, launched a political career as a Republican Trump loyalist just after the president-elect’s first term in the White House. She then lost the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs and Arizona’s U.S. Senate race this year to Democratic Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego.
In announcing Lake’s next job with the U.S. Government Network in an article published Wednesday evening in Truth Social, Trump said he expected Lake to use his position to counter “the fake media.” He also pointed out that she would technically be appointed by the U.S. Agency for Global Media, the federal agency that oversees VOA.
“I am pleased to announce that Kari Lake will be our next director of Voice of America,” Trump wrote. “She will be appointed to and work closely with our next director of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which I will announce soon, to ensure that American values of liberty and liberty are broadcast around the world fairly and precise, contrary to what is happening in the false media.
“Kari was a beloved news anchor in Arizona, who supported me by record margins, for over 20 years,” he added. “Congratulations Kari!”
News week contacted Lake’s office for comment via email Wednesday evening.
