Dovegate Prison investigates knife murder as family pays tribute to prisoner who was ‘no saint by any means’

The family of a prisoner who died in a Midland jail have described him as an “extraordinary character who was by no means a saint”. Stephen Strutt, an inmate at Dovegate Prison in Staffordshire, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being stabbed last Saturday, July 13.

The 42-year-old, who was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his father Warren Glover in a revenge attack, later died. A 46-year-old Dovegate inmate has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The suspect was released on bail and remanded in prison while police investigations continued. In a tribute from Staffordshire Police, Strutt’s family said: “Stephen was larger than life. He was the life and soul of the party.

β€œHe was devoted to his only son, whom he was extremely proud to see through to college. Ste, to those who knew him, had a big heart and was willing to help anyone if he could. Everyone had time for Ste. His huge circle of friends is a testament to that.

“He was not a saint at all, but he was loyal to his family and friends. He was a very strong personality.”
