The Lord Mayor’s Hot Air Balloon Regatta will finally take flight tomorrow morning (Sunday 21 July) after weeks of delays due to high winds. The balloon show was due to take place on Sunday 7 July but has been cancelled due to “unstable conditions” and high winds.
The event traditionally sees up to 50 hot air balloons take off from Battersea Park at around 5am and soar across London’s skies, raising money for the Mayor’s appeal. The launch site is not open to the public.
In an update today, organisers said: “We are delighted to confirm that we are officially moving to green status for the Lord Mayor’s Balloon Regatta flight tomorrow morning.”

They added: “The moving rain should clear the area before our launch time and should leave us with clear skies. Upper level winds are expected to blow just south of the river, but we’ll have a better understanding of the direction in this afternoon’s update.
“There is still a risk that wind gusts will be high, but the flight committee believes there is a good chance of securing a flight slot and so we are proceeding as planned.”

Organisers said a further update on tomorrow’s event will be released at 10pm, with more details on viewing times, adding: “We are closely monitoring the arrival times of weather fronts overnight, which could give us low cloud or light drizzle and prevent us from being able to launch.
“At this time, the chances of flight appear good and so the balloon teams are heading to the site… We want to remind everyone that the launch site is closed to the public.”
