Dozens of popular brands sold at Target, Walmart recalled – NBC Chicago

Dozens of brands of frozen waffles sold at Walmart, Target and other retailers have been recalled due to listeria concerns, a news release from the Food and Drug Administration says.

The recall was issued Oct. 18 by Oakbrook-based food manufacturer TreeHouse Foods, the release said. The products were distributed in the United States and Canada under various brands, including popular names like Kodiak, Great Value, Simple Truth and Good & Gather.

In total, 85 different products have been recalled, ranging from homemade waffles to buttermilk, protein, blueberries, chocolate chips and more. A full list of products and UPC codes can be found here.

According to the release, the problems were discovered during routine testing at a suburban facility. There have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products to date, the statement added.

TreeHouse Foods advised consumers to check their freezers for recalled products and return them to their place of purchase or dispose of them for credit.

The recall comes as nearly 12 million pounds of BrucePac’s ready-to-eat meat and poultry products sold in frozen meals, salads, sandwiches and bowls in popular grocery stores nationwide have also been recalled due to listeria.

The latest BrucePac recall update indicates that the recalled products have also been shipped to schools nationwide.

Listeria Symptoms

Listeria is an infection caused by bacteria. When listeria infects the intestines, it causes gastrointestinal symptoms similar to other foodborne illnesses, such as diarrhea and vomiting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Invasive listeria is of particular concern for pregnant people, newborns, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, TODAY.com reported. In pregnant women, invasive listeria can lead to miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth. The disease can also cause a life-threatening infection in newborns.

Signs of invasive listeria infection in pregnant women include fever and flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches, according to the CDC.
