Two men were killed and one person was arrested after a violent car crash in Harlem in which a pickup truck was driving the wrong way on the highway, police said.
The driver of the van fled the scene and remains at large, while his passenger was arrested about 30 feet from the scene, police said.
The violent multi-vehicle crash happened on northbound Henry Hudson Highway near West 154th Street around 2:20 a.m., police said.
The 40-year-old man driving the black Dodge sedan that was struck was taken to Harlem Hospital and later pronounced dead, authorities said.
His passenger, a 33-year-old man, was rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he was also later pronounced dead.
The driver and passenger of the van both fled the scene after the crash, police said.
“The passenger was apprehended approximately 30 feet from the van,” an NYPD spokesperson said.
The passenger, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Harlem Hospital with an ankle injury, police said.
The victims have not yet been publicly identified, pending notification of families.
The front half of the Dodge was completely crushed in the collision, according to photos of the damage.
Blood was seen staining the driver’s side airbag of the Dodge, as shown in a video taken by FNTV after the crash.
The van caught fire and had to be extinguished by firefighters, according to authorities and video taken by Loudlabs.
The black-and-red striped Dodge sedan had New Jersey license plates, while the pickup truck appeared to have Ontario, Canada, plates, according to the images.
A long line of cars was visible on the promenade after the incident.
A black Audi was also reportedly involved in the crash, but it is unclear what may have damaged the front of the vehicle. The driver of the Audi was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Video showed another SUV also appeared to be damaged in the collision, but police said no other injuries were reported.
No arrests have yet been made in the ongoing investigation, the NYPD said.
