East Ham fire live: Child dead and five hospitalised after ‘serious incident’ as 40 firefighters tackle blaze

A child has died and five people have been rushed to hospital after a house caught fire in east London this morning. London Fire Brigade sent six fire engines and 40 firefighters to a burning house on Napier Road, East Ham, at around 8.30am on Saturday morning (13 July), and managed to bring the blaze under control by 9.10am.

LFB Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne said: “Firefighters are responding to a serious incident in Newham. I would ask that you please avoid the area while the firefighters are responding as traffic is likely to be affected by the incident and await further information from the brigade.”




Paramedics were also present, with ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, members of the Hazard Response Team and the London Air Ambulance.

Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne has offered his sincere condolences following the tragic death of a child in a fire in East Ham this morning. The child’s age is not yet known.

He said: “This is a terribly sad incident and the thoughts of all of us at London Fire Brigade are with the family, friends and all those affected at this difficult time.

“Staff will be out in the local community over the coming days to offer support and advice if needed.

“The wellbeing of our staff is very important and all those affected will benefit from the support of our counselling and trauma service.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews and emergency service partners, one person died at the scene. Five people were rushed to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

Newham Metropolitan Police are also at the scene. A police spokesperson wrote on X: “We are currently working with @LFBNewham and @Ldn_Ambulance at Napier Road, E6. The incident is currently ongoing and updates will be issued as they become available. Napier Road is currently closed to access.”


As of Saturday afternoon, the Metropolitan Police said five people were still being treated in hospital, but their condition was pending. Police also said investigations were still underway to establish the cause of the fire.

Firefighters from Barking, Stratford, Ilford and surrounding fire stations responded.

Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne has offered his sincere condolences following the tragic death of a child in a house fire in East Ham this morning.

“Five people remain in hospital, but their condition remains uncertain” – Met Police

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said:

Police are investigating a fatal fire in West Ham.

Officers were called to a residential property on Napier Road at around 8.32am on Saturday 13 July following reports of a fire.

The officers were present alongside their colleagues from the LFB.

Sadly, one person was found dead inside the property. Enquiries are underway to find their next of kin.

Five other people were taken to hospital, where they remain injured. Their condition is pending.

A number of local road closures have been put in place while emergency services deal with the blaze.

Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson wrote on X:

We are currently working with @LFBNewham and @Ldn_Ambulance in Napier Road, E6.

The incident is currently ongoing and updates will be posted as they become available.

Napier Road is currently closed to access.

“The first floor and ground floor were on fire” – London Fire Brigade

A LFB spokesperson said:

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a house fire on Napier Road in East Ham.

Half of the first floor and the ground floor of a terraced house were on fire.

The brigade was called at 08:29 and the fire was under control by 09:09. Crews from Barking, Stratford, Ilford and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

“One person died at the scene” – London Ambulance Service

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said:

We were called at 8.30am today (13th July) to reports of a fire on Napier Road, East Ham.

We have sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the London Air Ambulance.

Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of our teams and emergency service partners, one person died on site. Five people were transported as a priority to a major trauma center.
