Ed Woodward knows his final Manchester United decision, and it is not Ole Gunnar Solskjær – Steven Railston

Ed Woodward has 47 days left in his position as Manchester United’s vice-president.

It was announced in April that Woodward would leave United at the end of the calendar year – his exit was brought forward amid the backlash from the collapsed European Superliga proposal – and that means his 16-year career at the club is coming to an end . .

Although there has been noise that Woodward could remain attached to United in an advisory role in the new year, he will no longer be the commander-in-chief of United. He will no longer be the face of Glazer’s regime. He will no longer antagonize fans with decisions.

Woodward will leave after the Christmas period, and it’s the best Christmas present some followers could receive, but before that gift is delivered and unpacked, Woodward has one last important decision to make before heading toward the exit.

There is a recognition that the results have not been good enough, but Solskjær survived the Liverpool debacle, and certain those in power at United believe that he can turn the club’s fortunes despite the fact that the red performances indicate otherwise.

It also seems highly unlikely that Woodward will allow his last act as chief executive officer to be the firing of Solskjær.

Woodward has offered unwavering support to Solskjær throughout his tenure, and therefore the United boss would potentially leave the club in a vulnerable position in the Premier League table as much as the responsibility of the chief executive as manager.

There’s another increasingly pressing issue at United that Woodward knows will be easier for him to maneuver and solve, and that is the future of Paul Pogba, who has only seven months left on his current United contract.

Pogba are free to negotiate pre-contract terms with clubs outside the Premier League in January, and despite Old Trafford bosses eager for the player to sign an extension, little progress has been made in talks with the player’s agent Mino Raiola.

The Frenchman was able to sign a contract to move for free from United in a little over a month, and that problem must be solved.

Pogba has not been the player that United thought they ‘brought’ home to Manchester five years ago. The 28-year-old has failed to produce consistent displays, and his glimmer of brilliance in a United shirt has been just that. After making an impressive start to the new season, his performance has gradually deteriorated and he would not be a loss to the United team in its current form.

When you think about it, it seems like an amicable divorce between Pogba and United in the January transfer window could be wise.

There should be no shortage of interest in Pogba. Juventus and Real Madrid have been regularly linked with the player, and some have claimed that the involvement of both clubs in the Superliga plan was born of financial necessity in the middle of their matches.

Signing Pogba for a reduced fee in January should be tempting, and Woodward may begin discussions to ease that now.

Both Solskjær’s and Pogba’s future at United need to be addressed, but it seems that sorting out the latter is the convenient option.
