(CBS DETROIT) — Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers have won their primaries for Michigan’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, according to CBS News.
Slotkin was expected to defeat actor Hill Harper on Tuesday, while Rogers was expected to defeat former Rep. Justin Amash and Sherry O’Donnell.
Slotkin and Rogers will now face off in November’s general election for the seat held by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who announced last year that she would not seek re-election.
Many candidates had announced their candidacies, but the field quickly narrowed to a handful of contenders vying for the seat Stabenow has held for more than 20 years.
Democrats currently maintain a narrow margin in the Senate but are defending far more seats in the November elections. Michigan Republicans have not won a Senate victory since 1994.
With Slotkin’s Senate bid, her House seat in Michigan’s 7th District is on the line. Democratic candidate Curtis Hertel and Republican Tom Barrett, who ran unopposed, will vie for the seat in November.
Harper, best known for his roles on the television series “CSI: NY” and “The Good Doctor,” told CBS News Detroit earlier this year that he wanted to bring something different to Congress as a small business owner and parent.
Rogers has the support of former President Donald Trump and financial support from national Republicans in his party’s race for the nomination. While businessman Sandy Pensler’s name was on the ballot, he withdrew from the race in July and has since endorsed Rogers.
The campaign also mirrored many aspects of the U.S. presidential election. Slotkin campaigned on protecting and expanding reproductive rights while Rogers criticized the Biden administration for its handling of border security.
