Exclusive: San José’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, Adega, makes a comeback

A year after closing their famous Portuguese restaurant – San José’s first and only Michelin star – owners Carlos and Fernanda Carreira announced they would reopen Adega.

Friday, November 15 will be the first evening of service in the city’s Little Portugal district, with executive chef David Costa and pastry chef Jessica Carreira returning to the helm.

“We didn’t expect people to miss Adega as much as we do,” Carlos said Monday. More precisely, Fernanda added. “They missed this level of gourmet service and food for their birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions.”

A return was always a possibility, with Carlos telling the Mercury News last December that many customers were begging them not to close Adega. “We tell them we’re just ‘backing them up in the cloud’ – to use Silicon Valley tech parlance – and who knows what the future holds for Adega? The brand and the company itself will remain active for the foreseeable future.

Over the past year, the Carreiras and their culinary team have dedicated themselves to developing their casual dining restaurant brand, Petiscos. Adega’s location on Alum Rock Avenue became a Petiscos, joining the original one located in downtown San Jose. And, as they announced earlier this year, they are planning and building a Petiscos location in South County in Gilroy. This should open in March 2025.

With Adega 2.0, the goal is to offer a destination dining experience with a fixed-price menu that will change frequently.

Michelin recognition “was never our intention from the beginning,” when the restaurant debuted in 2015, Fernanda said. “We were very touched by it.”
