Fans want Donald Trump to return to the Redskins after winning the presidency

The outcome of the 2024 presidential election has already seeped into the NFL. Football fans are calling on President-elect Donald Trump to change the name of the Washington Commanders to the Washington Redskins, according to MLFootball.

The majority of fans would support changing the team name. Last June, the Washington Post published a poll that found 58 percent of fans said they didn’t like the team’s new name.

As Trump is elected the country’s 47th president, fans are hoping he will make an effort to help change the organization’s name. It’s unclear what the president-elect might do since the team name is the choice of Washington’s owners.

The team was known as the Washington Redskins since the 1930s, but renamed the “Washington Football Team” in 2020. In 2022, the Commanders officially changed their name.

Fans shared their opinions on X, with a majority saying Trump should take action to encourage the Washington organization to change its name.

The organization is open to a name change, but the wife of Commanders majority owner Josh Harris has hinted that a possible name change won’t happen for some time.

“As you can imagine, everyone has an opinion on the name,” Majorie Harris said. “Some are good, some bad, some in the middle. I think we have a lot of work to do, so this name thing will be put aside for now until we can get things going.

“Honestly, I spent a whole day in the community and I kept calling the team the commanders. And you know what? That sounds pretty good to me. So for now, it’s the commanders. “

Ahead of the 2024 season, Harris said the franchise’s goal would be to become a championship team.

“This year it’s about our organization,” Harris said. “Last year was kind of about finding our way and not being able to make the changes that we were hoping to make until we had the opportunity to do so. Now we have done. We have an incredible quarterback (rookie Jayden Daniels) and we have an incredible coach (Quinn) and general manager (Adam Peters) and we are really putting the pieces together.

“We’re all really excited about what this team is starting to look like and what we hope can happen with a little luck, magic, skill and hard work.”

Ten weeks into the season, Jayden Daniels and company have put Washington back on the map. The Commanders are currently first in the NFC East and have a 7-2 record.

It’s unclear if the Commanders would consider a name change in 2025, but it’s clear the team is certainly going all-out this season.
